Biography

Awet started cycling in the 2012 season, through Mountain Bike, and a year later he started on the road, in the Cycling Club Sembei, where he was for two years, before moving on to one of the best amateur teams in his country, the Asbeco, where he ran during 2015 and 2016.

In that 2016 season he began to reap good results, as he went to the Qatar World Championships with the Eritrean team and finished seventh in the junior individual time trial. In the 2017 African Championships, already in his first year under 23, he got the silver medal in the U23 time trial and absolute bronze medal. In the road race he was eighth and fourth U23, in addition to winning the gold medal in the team time trial.

After these championships, the Eritrean team went to the Tropicale Amissa Bongo, in Gabon, where he managed to win the Mountain and Combativity Overall Standings, and finished eighth overall. There he coincided with the German Bike-AID team, a very special cyclist project, with an NGO structure, which offered him the opportunity to race in Europe.

Last year he completed some 40 days of competition and through his manager, former professional Robbie Hunter, he came into contact with the Contador Foundation and signed for Polartec- Kometa. Awet is the third of 11 brothers, of which only the oldest has also practiced cycling. His dream is to sign one day for Trek-Segafredo, “my favorite team”, and run the Tour de France.
